A SELECTION OF PREVIOUS CLASSES

Painting the Figure with Cynthia Bowles

This course will introduce the process of oil painting. Starting with underpainting, we will explore two approaches: the practice of wiping-out from a wet ground and the more classical method of building up light from a dry mid-tone ground.  Initially working from the plaster cast where tonal development is most easily studied, we will move on to colour and the human form working with a limited palette.

Material Requirements: Clearly this long wish list is offered as a guide to the best equipment. Without making to much of a commitment you can manage with two good bristle brushes, a plate, a flexible breakfast knife, and two jam jars. Don’t forget the cotton cloths!

Oil paint suggestion: Initially we will work with a limited palette of Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue. Should you elect to continue working with fewer colours, please include Raw Umber and Titanium White.
